Received a phone call Saturday morning from a girlfriend who recently moved to Tallahassee for a job. She took along her new boyfriend who recently lost his upper level executive finance position. I had met the boyfriend and found him to be charming and affable and thought he’ll have no problem securing a position in the capital city.
Friday night she drove home from work, pulled into the driveway, pushed the button on the garage door opener, and found her boyfriend hanging from the rafters!
The short story is that he was dead. The recession has now taken a personal slant and has a body count. What do you say to something like this? To someone in shock? Lots of, “Oh honey I’m so sorry that this happened.”
I suppose no one knows the meaning of Circle of Life as well as Jennifer Hudson.
Friday afternoon I received a phone call that a friend’s niece had given birth rather early to a set of healthy twin girls. Saturday afternoon I accompanied my friend to the hospital and joined the game of pass the baby. I nursed and burped and cuddled a four pound baby Giselle. Honestly the tiniest baby I have ever held.
If you have never held a baby before or are one of the women who lack maternal instinct I highly recommend this activity. It’s the same as petting a cat...it reduces stress.
Oh and before any of you ask, (Jill), I secured the afterbirth and will be roasting it on a spit and consuming it the night of the full moon in a sacred ceremony dedicated to the goddess of beauty, Aphrodite.

So sorry to hear about your friend's loss. How awful!!
ReplyDeleteHolding a newborn is an amazing experience. I remember holding my niece shortly after she was born. She'll be 13 this May.
Babies?
ReplyDeleteNo thank you.
Especially if they're burping or spewing at either end.
Thanks for giving a minute to realign with the 'bigger picture'.
ReplyDeleteBut I'm in the MJ camp. I'll take the cat, thanks. They know where the litter pan is and what it's for.
This post is exactly where my mind is at these days! My mother is fading as my daughters are blooming. So difficult to grasp either part of this equation that contains all of us....
ReplyDeletekabuki cannot explain loss and renewal any better than the others. I am not sure it can be explained. Things happen, good and bad, all the time, because we are alive.
ReplyDeleteMiss J is sorry for the Pirate's friend. How freaking awful.
ReplyDeleteBut happy for the delivery of healthy babies. That Miss J doesn't have to hold. Her mother instincts are strictly for dogs.

Good heavens, how horrible.
ReplyDeleteTruly. there are no words.
But I wonder why we can't rent babies, just for that purpose, you know?
I'm sorry to learn of your friend's tragedy. Frankly I think we'll hear more of this sad scenario; the recession is still strangling the nation. So many are reaching the end of their unemployment benefits and running out of options. Terribly awful news you've shared.
ReplyDeleteOn the flip-side: I like all babies. They always smell good until they poop. Then, not so much...
