Toni Time:

Happy Birthday wishes to my favorite and most talented Hollywoodland Vampire Choreographer, Miss Toni Basil.

Thrill to the delightful distraction of the GoGo. No one does GoGo like Toni…they just don’t know how to GoGo anymore…it’s a series of clean snapping movements with concise jerking motions precisely timed to the beat. Writhing and wriggling in undulating sexual syncopation doth not the GoGo make.

When attempting the GoGo one must remember tried and true Shindig approved GoGo steps: The Frug, The Swim, The Mashed Potato, The Twist, The Watusi, The Shake, and of course The Hitchhike. It’s not an officially sanctioned dance step unless it has a name and “The” in its title.

Let’s watch the master in action.

Toni Time:

Toni’s lifetime of performance clips montage, complete with funky remix mash up music. Did you know Toni was a regular guest on the Saturday Night Live first season? She was. She frequently showed up with her crew the Locker's of which she was the only female.

Oh Rerun…that Rerun…He was such a good popper-locker…I choose to believe that Toni taught him all that he knew. Sell it Rerun...sell it!

Shabadoo you say? What with his defiant display of the one dangly earring, he was hot and what an actor. His intimate scenes in the fabulously underrated movie, Breakin' with Kelly played by a luminous Lucinda Dickey take my breath away some twenty years later. Of course we all knew that the taboo Shabadoo’s unconventional pop’n lock moves would lure Kelly away from her lifetime of terpischorean traditional ballet studies in favor of the more lucrative aspects of street dancing. Like the boy says, "She aint no street dancer." I think Shaba was single handedly responsible for the tight lycra man midriff shirt that swept fashion capitals that season.

Toni reflects on her career of singing, acting, dancing and of course taking her clothes off in Five Easy Pieces. She only made $3000.00 American dollars in royalties for recording the smash hit Mickey. $3000.00? That’s all? I’ll be collecting donations for Toni at all local Circle K convenience stores. 100% of donations will be forwarded to Toni when she occupies her suite at the Old Choreographers Home.

She said, “It’s pronounced Ba’sil like in basalt and Lucille.”

And then I was all like, “Um I’m like her biggest fan. It’s pronounced Baz’l as in…Baz’l…Everybody knows that.”

Then she said, “Let’s trip out on some more groovy dancing from Village of the Giants featuring Toni Ba’sil.”

Then I went, “Aw hell nah...not until we settle dis.”

Toni Time:

I told you guys I thought Toni Basil was a vampire.

Introducing the Fabulous, the Incomparable and the Sexy…Miss Phoebe…

Toni Time:

It’s Toni Basil Weekend, all Toni all the time except if I post other things. To honor her 65th birthday this Monday.

That’s right 65.

She look good for 65.

Still twirling to the beat, not slowing down by any means. I mean sure she gets stove-up sometimes when a popin’ n’ a lockin’ but hey these things happen.

I wonder how she keeps so fresh? What’s her secret? She’s probably a vampire. It must be good genes. Dancing. That’s it dancing. Dancing is the elixir of life.

“Hey get a load of that red head up there” Who is that red head go-go dancer in a cage wearing the two-piece red shimmy dress? Watch the spark…the beginnings of true choreography the very essence of the juke joint shindig…the hullabaloo…and some hully gully thrown in for good measure.

Miz Basil...
