Brandwashing:

In the South there is a particular form of brainwashing or indoctrination that takes place early in the formative years of a young red neck that involves corporate branding. The results being a complete commercial lifestyle packaging available for purchase in the pursuit of becoming the ultimate red neck. You're not a “True” red neck unless you own, possess, or display most or all of these products at any given moment in your life. Also, there is a component of conspicuous consumption, or a bully factor that pressures the young red neck to conform and fit in by purchasing these icons of image and style.

Required accessories, products, and brands are as follows:

  1. Nascar
  2. Marlborough
  3. Budweiser
  4. Skoal
  5. Rebel Flag
  6. Ford - F150 or higher
  7. Vanity magnets including, "Support Our Troops" and "Breast Cancer Awareness"
  8. Coca-Cola, in the South, known simply and only as Coke.
  9. Harley Davidson, any of the various licenced products, including the motorcycle.
  10. Levis

This is by no means a complete compendium of consumer products aimed at the red neck and I’m sure that readers will be able to add to the growing list of Brands. Of course simply owning one or more of these items does not in any way imply that you are a red neck. However, watching Nascar, dipping skoal and smoking a Marlborough, flicking the ashes into a Coke can while swigging on a Budweiser in your Ford F150 with vanity magnets and a rebel flag decal, while wearing 501's and Harley Davidson boots might qualify you.

  4. Perfection. I knew people growing up who were more than proud to display all of those stereotypes. They even had an NRA sticker on their front door.
